A friend of mine told me this, "Fight terror with terror."
So where do we go from here? Do we helplessly
continue to watch the teeming number of innocent civilians be slaughtered
mercilessly at the hands of a bunch of 'God'-seeking terrorists?
Or do we fight back?
Change is good. It is what we need. We need a different system
prevailing here. We need people ruling over us who actually care, who don't
seek votes, who are willing to die for the common man. We need people to rule
over us who do more than just condemn such attacks and offer condolences and
compensations. We need a Prophet to save and help us when we need it the most.
They say that religion would save us.. But just
look what it gave us- all this unjustified and indiscriminate killing and blood
shedding. We need a Savior. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. We need
peace. We need humanity to step up for the cause of billions. We want these
barbaric acts to play the role of a wakeup call to stop such terror attacks in
the future. This stung us hard, right in the very heart of Mumbai and left many
of us devastated.
A rather easy situation to suggest would be to
just form a new government to remove Terrorism. But the battle between the
prevention and complete eradication of Terrorism in all totality is a highly
debatable situation. I'd say that Democracy is too weak to fight Terrorism. One
goes, another comes. Corruption in Politics cannot be removed. And this might
be a clichéd sentence, but at the end of the day, it's we ourselves who have
chosen them. Writing notes here and there and commenting on them don't really
lead us anywhere. It might arouse the consciousness of a couple of users on
these social-networking sites, it might move ourselves to self-pity, it might
end up melting us and mourning for them now and then, but then..
DOES OUR MESSAGE REACH THE MASSES?
Gandhiji had rightly remarked, "We
must be the change we wish to see in the world."
In another 4 years from now, a similar incident
shouldn't be a surprise for us! Mind you, this note of mine is not to force one
into rushing to the Taj Hotel or the Oberoi Hotel or the Nariman House or
anywhere with a gun in hand and saying 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. It's my personal
opinion only to make you think over for once. Our move for the future. How we
introspect the situation and move into the future with a better hope.
Mumbai is portrayed as the glittering Manhattan
of the East, as a place where movers and shakers party, as a place where
everyone gets on with the job.
It has always been more than easy for Mumbai to forget the people who die in such carnages. And it’s even easier when we go on our self-congratulatory spree, with everyone talking about how brave we are. It’s as if we are embarrassed to acknowledge the fact that terrorism has taken its toll on us. Just as we were embarrassed to admit that the rain could bring the city to its knees. There’s a difference between bravery and foolishness, between courage and helplessness. Those who run the city have now concluded that you and I are incapable of punishing them. So they watch amused as we sit around congratulating ourselves. Mumbai is intimidated. Just bravado and tall talk cannot save a city from cunning, ruthless, efficient criminals who know that our systems are vulnerable and compromised. Every city has its qualities, true and Mumbai may be special in many ways. But it’s silly to boast about 98% attendance at work, the day after a series of bomb blasts. It shows as much callousness as courage. Those who forget a tragedy so easily, become immune to it and immunity breeds fatalism. In any case, given the conditions in which most Mumbaikars live and work, it’s not possible to take a day off. It’s not about bravery; it’s more about livelihood. Mumbai doesn’t give you a second chance. It’s too tough a city. Every city tries to learn from their experience so it can cope better. They don’t gloss over the tragedy and pretend as if nothing happened.
Our crisis system has not improved one iota since 1993. Public hospitals are still as hopelessly inadequate as they always were. All we get is tall talk and glib lectures about Mumbai’s undying spirit. We pay more taxes than any other city. We contribute more to the nation’s growth and progress than all other cities put together. Yet nothing improves, nothing changes.
It is time we stopped allowing ourselves to be taken for granted. It is time we got really angry and stopped taking systemic failure for granted. It is time we demanded more from those we pay to keep in office. It is time we stopped allowing them to monkey around with our emotions by talking about how brave, how noble, how wonderful we are. Just because we bounce back, doesn’t mean we can be beaten down every time.

I hope my honest views help me pave our path into
this world and etch out a living to help the society. Change the system.

^_^ followed u gurl!
With due respect to profession of journalism, I request you, not to choose that profession. We've enough people who write good stories, real stories, and real stories of people suffering. You write most authentic investigative report, and then what?Who will ACT?
ReplyDeleteThey'll say - "Ek enquiry commission bitayenge"..
Do you know what happened to journalists who exposed MLAs watching porns in Karnataka? They're banned from entering assembly. They're questioned as if they're the culprits.
What you're talking about "Life should be respected, truth should be upheld, terror must be fought, violence must be reduced, environment must be protected", etc etc etc these are all basics everyone knows. What REALLY matters is how do you do it in real world with real people. REAL, IMPERFECT PEOPLE. People with power abuse weak, and this is eternal truth of human nature, you can't change. With journalism, you're just writing about these basics with specific incidents.
And trust me, people are just bored listening and reading lectures. What we need is someone who can act. Someone who can do things smartly. Not an emotional fool, but someone competent. Someone who talks less and does more. If you get angry, and emotional they exactly know how to manipulate. An angry mob that has lost its thinking is every politician's delight.
This is whole business of "complaining" and "finding faults" with others is just too useless, if it's not backed real action.
Our nation is built by hardworking people, who give their blood and sweat for the job they do. We have good number of these "drops", who make the ocean. Without these hardworking, average citizen, our nation would not have survived so long. After talking so much, if you just think of becoming another drop, you're just wasting your time.
You've a good soul. Though we don't know each other, and may never meet, I'm with you in your cause. Just as any other, who will join hands when they see real good in something.
Again, it all boils down to one simple question-
What we're going to do? And how effectively?
All the best
you know when we were in class 5 or 4 and our teacher asked us about our ambitions and goals then except for 3 girls including me rest said they want to go to the states and settle down even though they don't know what and how they just want to go...!
ReplyDeleteridiculous
you can complain about dirt and blah but when you through a LAYS ka packet on the roads you don't give a damn
whoa
awesomeness..!
i hate these kind of people. and yes for the question in your post HOW MANY WILL CHANGE THE SOCIETY?
count me in. either directly or indirectly
i will make my golden bird fly either by making a the whole world blind or by getting slapped .
and what mr GANDHI ji is so hypocritical, this is some hardcore reality not some ekta kapoors daily soap, some lakshmi pr sarswati takes a vouch to fight for her family.
stay united and see how even the tsunami surrenders .
well for your post
THANKYOU
i hope some people read it and think about their useless life.
and i hope you win..! :)
all the best
@Ananya- I wish the awareness would spread and people really worked than having loose talks :/
ReplyDelete@Sie- That is one hell of a faith you've shown in me. Thank you Sie :) .. I really hope the world turns a better place someday.. some day..
@Jela- Firstly, Welcome aboard. Moving on, I know Journalism can be quite a herculean task... there are going to be many barriers, many inidvidual difficulties one has to face.. In other words, it is just not easy.. But my motto is to try and bring out the truth.. Like Anon rightly pointed out there's no use in wasteful talk unles you do someting about it.. But it's great to know you're really working towards it.. I wish you success and all the best :D
@Anon- What you said is true! I completely respect your opinions and thoughts. I know ONLY talking is going to lead us to nowhere and that there are millions of journalists around the world. But really how many of them bring out just the truth. Do you remember anyone's name in particular? Not that I'm saying my name would be a door-to-door thing. But to bring about a change you have to fight. You might be pushed down.. you might be scoffed at.. but the aim is to try and bring about the change we wish to see.. Indiviidually I am nothing, but together we can do something. I firmly believe that! And thank you! Your comment made me a little more stronger. :)
@Suvaiba- I'm so happy to know that you're doing the little things. When people litter the society, or spit on the roads, it annoys me to extreme levels. I've chided a few too, but then till they make up their mind nothing can be done.. I hope better sense prevails.. Love :)
Wow, what a thought provoking post!
ReplyDeleteI think you'll be a good journalist one day.
I don't know that much about Indian Politics but this was a good insight.
I have a friend from India who's into politics so I might show this to her and see what she thinks.
Great post :)
very well written post.. it is something on every ones mind always especially for us folks living in delhi. I even had a nightmare once about a bomb blast when i had to go to chandini chowk the next day.. its horrible to live in such constant fear!
ReplyDeletep.s. thanks for stopping by at my blog :-)
U touched on a whole lot of points in one post..I liked the spirit..:-) I also read Anon's comment above..But despite everything,I liked the message you're trying to convey here...It's a good effort...
ReplyDeleteWow! That was so like me..I wanted to be a Journalist too! But I'm going to graduate an Engineer in a year now :D That remained my dream and yea...Good Luck sweets! Yours is a lovely entry to the contest!! :)<3

@TSW- Thank you :)
like the look of your blog.. stopped by because your post title is same as my blog name.. was nice to read your thoughts. If making a change is what you wish to do, You have chosen a good profession .. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYou raise the right kind of voice! There is a thing as right and wrong when you're fighting evil too. A level-headed approach, which treats terror as a menace within the society and not something alien is needed. We need more people like you! Good luck for the competition!
ReplyDelete@JAWUC- Wow that was sheer coincidence :) .. Thank you :)
ReplyDelete@Abhyudaya- Thanks :D
